Verwacht: Het harmonium in Nederland – 150 jaar muziekcultuur

Wim Olthof & Joop Rodenburg

Upcoming: The Reed Organ and Harmonium in the Netherlands- 150 years of Music Culture

Wim Olthof & Joop Rodenburg

For many, reed organs and harmoniums are forgotten instruments. Some still remember the one that stood in their grandparents’ living room, whilst others think mainly of the rather unflattering reputation the instrument has acquired over the years. But behind that image lies a surprisingly rich history. Generations grew up with reed instruments as a musical companion in the home.
Yet times changed. New instruments, shifting musical tastes, the rise of the radio and an increasingly negative image meant that reed instruments gradually faded from view. Many instruments were discarded and lost forever.
This richly illustrated hardback book, featuring full-color illustrations, takes the reader on a fascinating journey of discovery through the history of reed organs and harmoniums in the Netherlands.
Reader will see them as fully-fledged, expressive musical instruments, later as an alternative to the organ in churches and as a familiar sight in countless living rooms.
With unique photographs, remarkable instruments and compelling stories, this book brings reed instruments back to life. It demonstrates just how versatile, valuable and musical these instrument were – and still are.
This book is a joint initiative by Stichting Harmonium Museum Nederland and Stichting Museum Geelvinck.
